Turkey made a formal demarche to the Australian government maintaining that a Labor Party minister “uses in an unacceptable manner what took place in the period 1915-22 to win more votes for the Labor Party.”

The Turkish ambassador to Canberra visited the Australian Foreign Minister and protested against the “defamation” of his country, as he said.

According to “The Weekend Australian”, South Australia Minister of Justice, Multicultural and Veterans’ Affairs Michael Atkinson attended an event hosted a few months ago by the Pontian Brotherhood of South Australia on the occasion of its 50th anniversary dressed in a traditional Pontian costume.

Addressing a ceremony for the unveiling of a special plaque on the Pontian Genocide held at the Migration Museum of South Australia, Atkinson had referred to “the Pontian genocide committed by Kemal Ataturk’s nationalist Turks.”
