| Call for entries: artists' works |
On the occasion of the Olympics coming in Athens in 2004, the Federation of Hellenic American Organizations "ENOSIS", the Council of Hellenes Abroad North & South America Region and the Sisters Cities Chicago-Athens in cooperation with the Office of the Consul for Educational Affairs at the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago announce an open juried exhibition for artists residing in the United States.
The exhibition's theme has been inspired by the concept of 'ekecheiria', meaning truce in English. Ekecheiria was observed for over 1200 years during the events of the Olympic Games in the whole of the Greek world so that the Olympics could take place in an atmosphere free of conflict, aggression, and war.
Nowadays the word 'ekecheiria' is particularly relevant as it expresses our anguish with the continuation of acts of aggression and violence around the world as well as the survival of human phobias manifested through multiple faces of racism and terrorism. Ekecheiria can be the process of rethinking and reconsidering notions of peace. It is also dramatically connected with notions of time as Ekecheiria exists only in fragmented and fragile moments. History has proven that truce has a tendency to be ultimately violated.
The questions posed by this exhibition are, "How do artists define 'ekecheiria' (this valuable 'pause' in violence) in contemporary societies which are struggling with armed conflicts, bio-terrorism, and network virus attacks? How do they represent the human process of contemplating, rethinking and reconsidering peace as it is found during short periods of truce?
