TOP U.S. POLICY-MAKERS BECOME INVOLVED IN CYPRUS SETTLEMENT
WASHINGTON, 5/3/2004

Following meetings with CEH leaders in Washington, D.C. this week, several key U.S. policy-makers have become involved in the efforts to push for a just, viable and democratic Cyprus settlement.

On March 3, CEH leaders met for over one hour with the Chairman of the House International Relations Committee, Congressman Henry Hyde (R-IL), and the Staff Director of the Committee, Tom Mooney. These leaders also held strategy sessions with some of the most proactive supporters in the U.S. Congress. Those who talked with CEH leaders while they were in Washington this week included: Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD); Hellenic Caucus Co-chair, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY); House Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Democrat, Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY); House Democratic Leader, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA); as well as Congressmen Rob Andrews (D-NJ) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ).

Following these meetings, these Congressional leaders, along with Congressman Michael Bilirakis (R-FL), felt compelled to work closely with UN, EU and Administration officials in the weeks ahead in an effort to assure a positive result.

These are just the latest intensive efforts of CEH leaders to engage key U.S. policy-makers during this crucial time for Cyprus settlement efforts. Last week CEH leaders held a conference call with Undersecretary of State Marc Grossman. Last month, immediately prior to the visit to Washington of the Turkish Prime Minister, they met with Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

Those leading these CEH efforts include: Andrew A. Athens, World President of SAE and National Chairman of UHAC; Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA and the Pancyprian Association of America; Panicos Papanicolaou, President of the Cyprus Federation of America; Andrew E. Manatos, President of CEH; and Nikos Mouyiaris, Executive Vice President of Pancyprian Association.
