CELEBRATION OF HELLENIC INDEPENDENCE DAY MARCH 25th: Message by Mr. Andrew A. Athens, President, World Council of Hellenes (SAE)
CHICAGO, 22/3/2004
On this day of national rebirth, the Hellenic Diaspora shares the pride with all who feel part of the heroic tradition commemorated on the March 25th Independence Day. We celebrate even as we recognize the weight of national responsibility inspired by the deeds and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in 1821 so that Hellenism and Orthodoxy might henceforth thrive in the light of Liberty.
On this day we also remember that Diaspora Hellenism played a vital role in the War of Independence. Hellenes living outside the geographic boundaries of the nation helped organize and finance the resistance that acquired strong roots and blossomed in Hellas. However, we must remember that beyond the struggle for liberty inspired by patriots in the Diaspora, the presence of so many Hellenes in hospitable foreign lands gave an impetus to a vibrant philhellenic tradition.
Today, much like almost two centuries ago, we carry the torch of our values and traditions in the countries we call home. We are the bridges that connect the world community to Hellas. We are the voice that supports the just demands of the Hellenic nation. Today, we renew our pledge that in this unending struggle, the World Council of Hellenes will continue to play the role it has been entrusted by Hellenism, the support of causes such as the successful and safe staging of the Olympic Games this year. And above all we will remain vigilant campaigners for Hellenic Unity, and for Commitment to our ideals and to the quest for a peaceful and just world.
Andrew A. Athens
