CEH LEADERS WELCOME FINAL RECOGNITION OF PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM
WASHINGTON, 31/3/2004
CEH leaders today welcomed the final recognition by the State of Israel of Patriarch of Jerusalem, Irineos. Today the Israeli High Court finally threw out the last false claims against Patriarch Irineos and the Minister of the Interior is expected today to present the Patriarch with the formal letter confirming his recognition by Israel.
On January 25, 2004 the Israeli Cabinet decided to recognize Patriarch Irineos election as Patriarch of Jerusalem from back in August of 2001. However, Israels High Court instructed the government to postpone its recognition of the Patriarch until the judges could rule on two petitions filed against the appointment.
Today we celebrate the end of a very long, hard fight for justice, said CEH Chairman and SAE World President Andrew Athens and CEH President Andrew E. Manatos, who coordinated U.S. efforts to secure recognition.
We would like to again thank those very important friends of Israel who joined us in working hard for this recognition, including: nearly 95% of the members of the U.S. House of Representatives of the Jewish faith; 156 members of the U.S. Congress; the leadership of the American Jewish Committee; the George Bush Administration; numerous U.S. Senators including Joseph Lieberman; and the National Council of Churches, to name a few.
