TOP U.S. OFFICIAL ON CYPRUS HEARS COMMUNITY CONCERNS ABOUT SETTLEMENT TALKS FROM CEH LEADERS
WASHINGTON, D.C., 25/2/2004
The senior American official most influential to the Cyprus issue over the years, U.S. Undersecretary of State Marc Grossman, today privately discussed the significant concerns of the Hellenic-American community about the Cyprus settlement talks with the leaders of the Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH). These leaders said, It is important that our government understand that while we appreciate the skillful role America and Undersecretary Grossman played in bringing Cyprus to early accession to the European Union with or without a settlement, we are concerned about the position America is taking in the negotiations.
Our communitys opinion about the settlement talks is similar to that of the Greek-Cypriots, as expressed in recent public opinion polls, or, we believe, that of any other people presented with such a government for their country. There was support for the `Annan Plan as a place to start the negotiations, but very little support for the Plan as the end product.
Following the over 30 minute discussion with Undersecretary Grossman, the third-highest ranking official at the State Department, these leaders said, To its credit, in recent years America and Undersecretary Grossman have communicated to Turkey that it must adhere to the principles of democracy and the rights of others, if it is to succeed in the modern world. It is essential that America make those principles manifest in the kind of Cyprus settlement we are advocating.
As Americans we feel strongly about these general principals for which our country should stand. It is up to the duly-elected government of Cyprus to decide specifically which combination of provisions of a settlement are in the best interests of their people."
Those CEH leaders who have personally pressed, behind-the-scenes, the top American policy-makers on the Cyprus issue for 30 years and who participated in this discussion included: Andrew A. Athens, World President of SAE and National Chairman of UHAC; Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA and the Pancyprian Association of America; Panicos Papanicolaou, President of the Cyprus Federation of America; Andrew E. Manatos, President of CEH; and Nikos Mouyiaris, Executive Vice President of Pancyprian Association.
