PRESS RELEASE
Athens, 18/8/2004
More than one million students of public schools in Chicago and Philadelphia, USA and in Moscow participated at the program Teach Olympics that was organized by the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Culture and was implemented in all levels of elementary and secondary education in the three cities.
We never doubted the fact that Greece will organize excellent and safe Olympic Games and this is what we have tried all these years to promote around the world, SAE President, Mr. Andrew A. Athens said. All Hellenes around the world feel proud that Greece has achieved this and so many other goals, and we will all continue to support our homeland by building solid bridges of friendship among Greece and the countries we live in. A part of this effort was the program Teach Olympics through which more than one million students were taught the meaning of the Olympic Games and the principles of the Greek culture. The acceptance of the program by the local communities reassures us that we have made many new philhellenes.
Last night SAE President hosted in Athens a dinner in honor of the winners of the program, the 12 year old Porto Rican Christina Cruz from Philadelphia, the 12 year old Joseph Camper from Chicago and the 8 year old Maria Deriabina from Moscow. The students thanked SAE for offering them the opportunity to learn so much about the Olympic Games and to enjoy with their parents and teachers, a 7-day trip to Greece during the Games. The students mentioned that their presence at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games was an unforgettable experience and that they cannot wait to return to their countries to tell their co-students of all they have experienced in Greece.
Present at the event was the President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis.
Apart from Greek and Hellenic Mass Media Abroad, the event was also covered by NBC, the network that has the exclusive broadcasting rights for the Games of Athens in USA.
Teach Olympics was implemented following a proposal of SAE submitted to the Greek Ministry of Culture. Having the support of the Mayors and the educational agencies of Chicago, Philadelphia and Moscow, the program was implemented since 2003 in public schools of the three cities.
Ms. Eleni Katsarou, Coordinator of SAE Culture Network and responsible for the program mentions the impressive way via which the students approached the meaning of the Olympic Ideals.
Teach Olympics also included an Art and Poetry contest for students of secondary education. The winners were awarded laptops, scholarships for Art Institutions and other awards.
