At 5:30 on the morning of Saturday, July 20, 1974, the citizens of the sovereign
island-nation of Cyprus woke to the deafening sound of bombs, and the nauseating
smell of napalm. A massive invasion by vastly superior Turkish armed forces
threw Cyprus and its people into a nightmare of injustice while the world watchedbut
did nothing
The Hellenes of N. & S. America, and all freedom-loving people in our
Hemisphere, want the long-suffering people of Cyprus, Greeks and Turks alike,
to know that we share in their 30-year ordeal, said Chris P. Tomaras, V.P.
and Regional Coordinator for The Americas. Our fellow Hellenes on the island
should also know that we support their democratic right to reject the Annan
Plan, and that Regional Coordinating Council Member Andreas D. Comodromos and
I are working closely with Pres. Andrew A. Athens, Philip Christopher and
PSEKA, Peter Papanicolaou and the Cyprus Federation, Andrew Manatos, and all
the other members of the community, to distill and promote an alternative solution
a solution that will allow both communities to resume their lives and truly
begin to enjoy the benefits of Cyprus hard-fought accession into the European
Union. The generation that suffered through this totally unjustified invasion,
and future generations of Cypriot children, deserve nothing less from their
brothers and sisters throughout The Diaspora, Tomaras concluded.
WHAT YOU CAN DO -
CALL OR WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES IN GOVERNMENT, DEMANDING THAT THEY WORK FOR
A JUST SOLUTION, AND AN END, TO 30 YEARS OF INJUSTICE.
