PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
PRESS RELEASE
Thessaloniki, 12/9/2004
The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Mr. Andrew A. Athens expressed his grief for the tragic loss of the Pope & Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, Petros VI, the members of his delegation and the crew of the helicopter.
The sudden and tragic loss of the Patriarch of Alexandria has filled Orthodoxy and Ecumenical Hellenism with mourning and grief.
It is very difficult to speak at this time for the personality of this wise and capable Patriarch who was loved by his flock as nobody else. His work was inspired by his endless love for his fellow human beings and is recognized by worldwide Hellenism.
I had the honor to personally know the Patriarch and the difficult conditions under which he implemented his valuable work. He was the one to select the most difficult missions in order to promote the Patriarchates work all over the African Continent.
Patriarch Petros supported with all his powers the global Omogeneia and was one of the first to support the idea of the founding of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad in 1995, when he became its Delegate from the position of the Metropolitan of Cameroon and West Africa. The least we can say at such a difficult time is that we will make any possible effort to implement the work we had planned for Hellenism in Africa.
We would also like to express our grief for the loss of the journalist Giorgos Xenoudakis, member of the Board of the Federation of Hellenic Mass Media Abroad who significantly contributed all these years to the promotion of issues relevant to the Omogeneia and Orthodoxy.
On behalf of all Hellenes around the world I would like to offer my condolences to the families of all members of the Patriarchs delegation and the families of the crew of the helicopter.
