PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
SAE s President to receive award, will be honored for contributions to improve ethnic relations in America
Washington, 2/5/2004

World SAE President Andrew A. Athens will receive at a Washington convention, on May 4, the first American Jewish Committee (AJC) award for extraordinary work in improving relations among Americas ethnic groups, it was recently announced.

All of us felt you were the obvious choice (for the award) as we honor those who have worked to bring our communities together in the great tradition of our nation, stated Harold Tanner, president, and David Harris, executive director of AJC when they announced they had chosen Mr. Athens for the Intergroup Relations Award.

They continued, We have appreciated all the work you have done to bring the Jewish and Greek communities in this country together over so many years, including those times that required all your diplomatic skill and personal investment. Also, you contributed greatly to the bi-lateral relations between Greece and the U.S., and to a better understanding among Greek leaders of Jewish concerns and interests... Hundreds of Jewish leaders from around the country, as well as representatives of 50 Jewish communities abroad (will attend the awards ceremony.)

I feel very honored that the American Jewish Committee has chosen me from among the thousands of ethnic leaders in America, Mr. Athens said. As we have done since the 70s, we will continue to build bridges, and I anticipate that we will continue to cooperate on issues of common interest to the benefit of all of us. As National Chairman of the United Hellenic American Congress, Mr. Athens was among the first to join the Illinois Ethnic Coalition almost 40 years ago.

The latest issue, on which Mr. Athens worked successfully with the Jewish communities in the U.S. and in Greece, and with the State of Israel, was the official recognition of Patriarch Ireneus of Jerusalem and All Palestine. Recently, the Israeli government recognized the Patriarch after two years of negotiations during which the American Jewish Committee actively supported the official state recognition.
