NEW INITIATIVES OF SAE IN THE BALKANS
Chicago, 25/11/1999
The World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) has launched a new Medical Relief Program in the Balkans following a special agreement in Albania, was announced Wednesday by Mr. Andrew A. Athens, President of SAE.
SAE has made an agreement with Archbishop Anastasios of Albania to establish medical centers that would help the needy citizens of the ethnic populated areas of S.Albania together with the Hellenic communities of the region. The agreement was made after the talks with members of the Albanian government that led to the licensing of the program.
According to Mr. Athens` announcement, he met with the Albanian Minister of Health last week along with Dr. Charles Kanakis, Medical Affairs Director of SAE who is one of the coordinators of a similar program, already successfully operating in the New Independent Republics of the former Soviet Union.
It was the third time that Mr. Athens visited Albania in the last six months, within the framework of an extended philanthropic program he and Archbishop Anastasios have been elaborating for quite some time. The Greek-Orthodox religious leader has been actively supporting various social and medical programs for the Omogeneia.
Mr. Athens said that he is very optimistic that SAE`s new initiative will become a reality in the very near future.
