SAE President begins world trip to Cuba, Hellas with top-level meetings in Washington

CHICAGO, January 20 - Andrew A. Athens, President of the World Council of Hellenes (SAE), is scheduled to launch his three-stop international tour tomorrow with a meeting with top level U.S. government officials in Washington.

At a meeting with State Secretary Colin Powell, National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, State Department, Deputy Secretary Mark Grossman and U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes, Mr. Athens and four other leaders of the Hellenic community will discuss developments on Cyprus and the delayed recognition by the Israeli government of Jerusalem Patriarch Ireneios.

Present at discussions on the anticipated full membership of Cyprus in the European Union and progress in securing official recognition of the Patriarch will be Andrew Manatos, President of the Coordinated Effort of Hellenes; Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA; Panikos Papanikolaou, Vice-President of POMAK; and A. Jack Georgalas, President AHEPA.

From Washington, DC, Mr. Athens will travel to Cuba January 22 to participate in the consecration of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and the official recognition of the Holy Metropolis of Panama and Central America by the Cuban government. This occasion also marks the first visit to Cuba by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Finally, SAE's president will attend in Athens the first Memorial Day for Hellene Jews who perished in the Holocaust, an event organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The commemoration will take place January 27 at the International Convention Center of Megaro Mousikis.
