SAE unveils multitude of special events celebrating Olympic Torch Relay in U.S.
CHICAGO, 13/4/2004

The Olympic Torch Relay Celebration in Chicago, a program with more than 12 special events, was unveiled by World SAE President Andrew A. Athens in a meeting with His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos, Consul General Aliki Hadji and Demetra Egan, representative of Olympic Games Athens 2004.

The Olympic Torch will visit the city of St. Louis, home of the 1904 Olympic Games, but a special celebration is taking place in Chicago, too, in order to create further public support in the U.S. and to enhance the St. Louis celebrations. The two-month program is co-sponsored by the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, the Consulate General of Greece, SAE of North and South America and other local organizations. It includes exhibits, lectures, and award ceremonies for winners of contests staged in various schools.

Our aim is to seize this opportunity to showcase various aspects of Hellenic culture pertinent to the Olympic Games and their historic birthplace in Greece, Mr. Athens said during the meeting. The special committee also includes SAE Vice President Chris Tomaras; Dr. Eleni Katsarou, chairperson of SAEs Cultural Committee; Demetrios Kozonis, chairperson of the Athens-Chicago Sister Cities committee; John Marks, president, and Dr. Elaine Drikakis, executive director, of the Hellenic Museum; and Education Consul Stavroula-Thiriou.

This is an extraordinary program with a large number of very interesting events that have been carefully selected, said Mrs. Egan, Manager, Volunteers Recruitment and Retention of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games Athens 2004. Mrs. Egan was on a tour of cities hosts of the torch relay and several cities that will host only special events.

The program includes an exhibit of Olympic Torches; the ceremony announcing the winners in the Chicago Public Schools Contest on the Olympics; events announcing winners in competitions in Greek schools and other competitions; multi-media presentations in suburban areas; the Junior Olympics; a juried exhibition of works inspired by the Olympic Truce; lectures on Greek Identity and the Olympics and on the games themselves.

The Olympic Torch will be brought to St. Louis on June 17. The 12 events that are part of Olympic Torch Relay Celebration in Chicago take place May 14 through June 30. Detailed information will be announced the last week in April. For more information call World SAE in Chicago, 312-337-0004.
