HEADS OF TOP HELLENIC-AMERICAN ORGANIZATIONS MAKE PLEDGE TO CYPRIOT PEOPLE
WASHINGTON, 19/4/2004

Today CEH leaders released the attached pledge to the Cypriot people signed by the heads of major Hellenic-American organizations.

They pledged to do everything possible to assure that the American government treats Cyprus properly after the April 24 vote on the flawed Annan plan, stressing that Cypriots have nothing to fear but fear itself.

CEH leaders who initiated this effort included: Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA; Peter Papanicolaou, Supreme President of the Cyprus Federation of America; Andrew A. Athens, World President of SAE; and Andrew E. Manatos, President of CEH.

Greek-American Leaders Pledge for Cyprus

April 19, 2004

We the undersigned heads of major Hellenic-American organizations pledge to do everything possible to assure that the American government treats Cyprus properly after the April 24, 2004 vote on the flawed Annan plan. The duly-elected representative of the people of Cyprus, President Tassos Papadopoulos, and the largest party in the House of Representatives (AKEL), do not support the plan, as written, and surveys indicate that the vast majority of Greek-Cypriots will vote no. If they do, we are trying to assure that they have nothing to fear but fear itself.

As President George W. Bush told us at the White House on April 1, 2004, and as European Union Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen said on April 4, the Cypriot people will decide this issue and we must respect their decision. Further, as the Commissioner said, we should be very, very careful not to give the impression that we put pressure on the Greek-Cypriots, after all it is their country.

If the plan is not accepted, the sun will rise again on Cyprus; nothing changes. Cypriots of all ethnicities will continue, as they have for a very long time, coming together in peace at every opportunity, in London or Cyprus. And, to the detriment of Turkey, the U.S., and of all Cypriot people, Turkish troops will continue their military occupation, for which the U.S. bears some responsibility.

After the referenda, regardless of the outcome, it is imperative that the U.S. government do what President Bush told us it would on April 1. He said the U.S. will use its abilities as a superpower to promote human rights, freedom and democracy wherever it can and that he does not expect Cypriots to accept what Americans would not. As many key officials in our government realize, to do otherwise will dangerously encourage instability in the region. Americans especially those familiar with the unjust, illegal conditions under which the people of Cyprus have had to live for over 30 years could not support such a policy.
