Historic! SAE World President stresses significance of gathering in Washington
WASHINGTON, 8/4/2004
A benchmark in the history of the Omogeneia in America, is the way World SAE President Andrew A. Athens characterized the events that took place in the capital of the United States last week when Hellenes from around the country met with President Bush.
More than 1,100 Hellenes and philhellenes gathered to honor the American President at a dinner Wednesday organized by leading California businessman Alex Spanos. The following day, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios headed a group of leaders in the Hellenic community in a meeting with President Bush who signed a declaration celebrating Greek Independence Day March 25th as a holiday in the United States.
The gathering in Washington of so many Hellenes willing to make a contribution to any U.S. leader as one group is a remarkable, unprecedented event, Mr. Athens said. It shows that we have matured in our actions and in the way we petition the government to pay attention to the issues that interest Americans of Hellenic heritage. More than $1.6 million was raised at the dinner and the total sum is expected to reach the $2 million.
I congratulate Mr. Spanos for the successful efforts he concentrated in accomplishing this remarkable goal, said Mr. Athens who was an active participant at the dinner and the following days meeting with the President along with Andy Manatos, president of the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH), and Phil Christopher, president of the Cypriot group PSEKA.
