SAE President vows to press President Bush to honor the rights, aspirations of Cypriots
WASHINGTON, 21/4/2004
The sacred duty of the Hellenic leadership in America is to assure that the U.S. government respects the principles that enable the Cypriots to decide on the Annan plan while other states refrain from pressuring Greek-Cypriots whose majority has indicated it will vote against the plan as it is written, said World SAE President Andrew A. Athens today.
We will hold President Bush to his word as he told us recently that the U.S. will promote human rights, freedom and democracy, Mr. Athens said as he signed a statement prepared by 17 Greek American leaders and delivered to the American President. Nobody can force the Cypriots to accept a settlement that does not reflect their national and human aspirations.
The statement was prepared by the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH) and was also signed by the leadership of the Cypriot community in the United States. Cypriots are expected to vote on the flawed Annan plan in a referendum on April 24. Mr. Athens was in Washington recently where Hellenes from around the country met for a fundraising dinner sponsored by businessman Alex Spanos for President Bush.
Among those signing the statement expressing the position of the Greek American leaders were Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA; Andrew E. Manatos, President of CEH; Peter Papanicolaou, supreme president, Cyprus Federation of America; Savas Tsivikos, past president of the federation, and Nikos Mouyiaris, executive vice president, Pancyprian Association of America.
