SAE President concludes Meetings in Athens
Athens, 30/4/2004

The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, Mr. Andrew A. Athens expressed his satisfaction on the meetings he had in Athens with the Prime Minister, Mr. Konstantinos Karamanlis, the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Ms. Anna Psarouda-Benaki, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Petros Moliviatis, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis, the Minister of Development, Mr. Dimitris Sioufas and the Alternate Minister of Culture, Ms. Fanni Palli-Petralia, as well as with the President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis and the A� Vice-President of the same Committee, Mr. Grigoris Niotis.

�I am certain that we will work in unity with both the Parliament and the Government for the promotion of new ideas and the achievement of the goals of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, to the benefit of the Omogeneia and Greece�, Mr. Athens stated.

During Mr. Athens� meeting with the Prime Minister yesterday, with the presence of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis, Mr. Karamanlis expressed his commitment for the immediate implementation of the Government policies regarding Hellenism Abroad with the primary goal being that of the upgrading of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), and that of the General Secretariat Abroad (GGAE). Education and Culture will be the areas of focus for the immediate future. The support of SAE�s Medical Centers in the former Soviet Union and Albania is also a primary goal of the Hellenic Government.

Mr. Athens reassured the Prime Minister of his personal and SAE�s support to Greece and Cyprus, through the continuous promotion of our National Issues. On May 4, 2004 Mr. Athens will have a meeting with the Under Secretary of the US State Department, Marc Grossman, and will be the co-President of the annual Convention organized by SAE, the World Federation of Cypriots Abroad (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee �Justice for Cyprus� (PSEKA), which will take place in Washington on May 12-14, 2004.

During the meetings with the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Ms. Anna Psarouda-Benaki and with the President and the A� Vice-President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis and Mr. Grigoris Niotis, Mr. Athens discussed the possibilities for further cooperation with the new Committee as well as the strengthening of relations among the Hellenic Parliament and the American Congress.

Ms. Benaki congratulated Mr. Athens for SAE�s work to the benefit of worldwide Hellenism and promised that the Hellenic Parliament will continue to offer its support to SAE�s efforts for the promotion and achievement of its goals.

At the meeting with the Minister of Development, Mr. Dimitris Sioufas, Mr. Athens discussed issues of cooperation among the Ministry and the World Council of Hellenes Abroad around the world, and especially the development of activities and the cooperation among the Ministry and Hellene Businessmen of the Diaspora.

Mr. Athens also met with the Alternate Minister of Culture, Ms. Fani Palli-Petralia, where he updated her on the development of SAE�s educational Project �Teach Olympics� that is now being implemented in public schools of Chicago and Philadelphia with approximately 750.000 students.

Ms. Petralia promised to continue the support of the program and its implementation in Moscow. Mr. Athens also discussed with the Minister the issue of Hellene Volunteers for the Olympic Games of Athens.

SAE President also had a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible for Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis. Mr. Athens thanked the Deputy Minister for the excellent cooperation they had all these years to the benefit of worldwide Omogeneia. The discussions focused on issues of planning and the upgrade of SAE�s role.

Finally, during his stay in Athens, SAE President had on April 27 a brief meeting with the Cypriot President, Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos. During the meeting Mr. Athens ensured Mr. Papadopoulos of his personal and SAE�s continuing effort for a viable and just solution for Cyprus, which will allow Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots to live together in peace, within the safety environment offered to them through the full accession of Cyprus in the European Union.

Mr. Athens was accompanied at all meetings by SAE Treasurer, Mr. Cos Georganas.
