SAEs President honored by American Jewish Committee with standing ovation for wise leadership among ethnic groups
Washington, 5/5/2004
With a standing ovation, the audience received World Council of Hellenes (SAE) President Andrew A. Athens and honored him yesterday at the Washington gala dinner of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), a leading organization in the U.S., for his leadership in promoting relations among Americas ethnic groups.
The Intergroup Relations Citation of AJC was presented to Mr. Athens In recognition of his wise leadership and extraordinary efforts, for over three decades, in forging bonds of friendship and understanding between the Greek-American and Jewish-American communities, the Greek and Jewish Diasporas worldwide, and the Hellenic Republic and the State of Israel.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Tom Miller and AJC Honorary President Bruce Ramer introduced Mr. Athens to the dinner audience. Mr. Athens is the first recipient of the Intergroup Relations Citation.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Athens emphasized 30 years of cooperation between the United Hellenic American Congress and SAE on one side and AJC on the other, on important issues such as the recent recognition of Patriarch Ireneos of Jerusalem by Israel and on providing medical care to Jewish families in the Republic of Georgia as part of SAEs Primary Health Care Initiative.
