SAE Board Meets in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki, 2/6/2004
SAEs action plan until the end of the current year as well as SAEs Strategic Plan for 2004-2010, were the main issues discussed today at the SAE Board Meeting among the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Panayiotis Skandalakis, SAE Board and SAE Networks Coordinators (Youth, Culture, Scientists, Business and Women). SAE President, Mr. Andrew A. Athens presided at the meeting.
Hellenism Abroad is one of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanliss priorities. Within this frame we will promote the upgrading of both the World Council of Hellenes Abroad and the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad, said Mr. Skandalakis following the end of the meeting, noting at the same time that Hellenism Abroad is a huge power that has the ability to assist Greece in many areas, while Greece on the other hand has offered Hellenism Abroad very few.
What we need is a well coordinated program in order to begin our activities on issues regarding education, culture and other issues of concern for Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Skandalakis said. SAE should be upgraded. Eight years have gone by since SAEs establishment and I believe that it has been tested. All mistakes should not be repeated in the future and I believe that SAE, the GGAE that should have from now on a more active role, the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will have a well coordinated cooperation and will produce the best possible results. We are obliged to go through with this to the benefit of the younger generations.
Mr. Skandalakis also mentioned that any changes regarding the upgrading of SAE and the GGAE will be announced in the near future.
On the issue of the Olympic Games, the Deputy Minister noted that their return to their birth place offers the unique opportunity to Greece to promote its image as a modern European country that can offer a lot not only to Europe but to all the world, while he expressed his certainty that the Olympic Games in Athens will be the best and safest games ever organized.
