SAE EUROPE COORDINATING COUNCIL CONCLUDES ITS MEETINGS IN THESSALONIKI

SAE Europe Coordinating Council and SAE Europe Youth Coordinating Committee held their meeting in SAE Thessaloniki Office on July 3 & 4, 2004. The President and A` Vice President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis and Mr. Gregory Niotis and SAE`s Alternate President, Mr. Stefanos Tamvakis, also attended the meeting.
During the two day meeting the SAE Europe Coordinating Council discussed the following issues: Education, National Fund of Hellenes Abroad, Epistolary Voting and the role of Hellenic Communities of Europe. The Coordinating Council also had a meeting with the Prefect of Thessaloniki, Mr. Panayiotis Psomiadis.
SAE Alternate President, Mr. Stefanos Tamvakis updated the 11-member Coordinating Council on the decisions taken during the last meeting of the SAE Board and focused on issues relevant to the upgrading of the GGAE and SAE, the Enabling Law for SAE, the operation of the Netowrks, the preparation of the 2nd ELLINIADA and SAE�s participation at the promotion of the Olympic Games ATHENS 2004. Mr. Tamvakis also spoke on SAE�s cooperation with the Hellenic Communities around the world emphasizing on issues regarding Youth, Culture and Education.
On issues regarding Education it was mentioned that education is of major importance for the continuance of the existence of Hellenism and that a specific plan should be prepared in order to offer solutions. The need for the amendment of the Law 2413/1996 was also mentioned, while by the end of the year the Federations of the Hellenic Communities of Europe will submit proposals to SAE Europe Coordinating Council in order to prepare a strategic plan for education. For the countries of the Black Sea it was stressed that there is a need for the enhancement by the Hellenic State,of the 5 year Educational Program implemented by SAE Europe. Mr. Aslanidis participation at IPODE is considered very important to this direction. It was decided to prepare a proposal regarding the creation of an Open University of Hellenism Abroad in Europe.
SAE Europe Coordinating Council also discussed the issue of distant voting for Hellenes Abroad, and decided to submit until the end of the year a draft law for this issue to the SAE Board, the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis. On the issue of National Fund of Hellenes Abroad, it was decided to proceed to amendments of its constitution in order to ensure statutory control and to submit a strategic plan that will link ETO to other projects. The fixed participation of the Hellenic State with at least 50% at ETO`s budget was requested.
Regarding the role of Hellenic Communities as supporting factors for Hellenes Abroad, it was stressed that there is a need for the Hellenic associations to become more challenging and to focus on the wide base of the Omogeneia and the local communities, always with the contribution of the Hellenic State. SAE Europe Coordinating Council in cooperation with the European Communities` Federations will submit until the end of the year a report and a complete proposal on the upgrading of the Hellenic Communities in Europe.
A round table discussion was also held on issues regarding strategic priorities for Hellenism Abroad in Europe. Among the speakers were the President and A` Vice-President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis and Mr. Gregory Niotis.
The discussion that followed promoted a series of issues such are: the need of cooperation among the Regions, the enhancement of the relations with the Hellenic State, the submission of proposals on the Enabling Law for SAE focusing of its advisory and consultative role, the issues regarding representation of Hellenic organizations to SAE and the need for an upgrading of the role of SAE`s Network especially of Youth, Scientists and Business.
During the meeting with the Prefect of Thessaloniki, Mr. Panayiotis Psomiadis, the common willingness for further cooperation among the Prefecture and SAE was expressed especially for the countries of the Black Sea. SAE Europe expresses its support to the request of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki regarding the immediate deposit of the amounts due for the years 2003-2004.
SAE is represented at the organization �Europeans of the World�, through SAE Europe Region since 1999. Following an update by Mr. Pasxalis Papachristopoulos and Mr. Yiorgos Klotsonis that represent SAE Europe Region at the organization, it was decided that SAE Europe Region will submit a proposal regarding the organizing of a conference with the participation of all European Hellenic Associations. Mr. Haitidis promised to submit a proposal to the Hellenic Parliament for the promotion of cooperation with the relevant Parliamentary Committees of the other European countries.
Following an update made by the Consul General of Cyprus in Thessaloniki, Mr. Antonis Theoharous and the Vice-President of POMAK, Mr. Kostas Stamataris, it was decided to organize open informational events aiming at the promotion of the Cyprus Issue at the countries-members of the European Union.
Finally, SAE Europe Coordinating Council decided to hold the inauguration of the Medical Center in Starij Kriim of Mariupol on October 2-3, 2004.
