PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
MESSAGE OF SAE PRESIDENT ANDREW A. ATHENS FOR THE 30th ANNIVERSARY OF THE INVASION IN CYPRUS
Chicago, 17/7/2004

On July 20 worldwide Hellenism will commemorate the anniversary of the invasion of Cyprus. Thirty years after the invasion we all hope that soon an end will be put to the tragic consequences of the invasion and the division of the island.

Cypruss accession to the European Union justified the continuous struggle of the Omogeneia, which from the first moment stood by the governments of Cyprus and Greece. Now it is important to support in unity the efforts made for a solution to the political problem so that Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots equally enjoy the benefits arising from the islands participation in the great European family.

To this end, we firmly support the renewed efforts of the two governments for a just and viable solution according to international principles of justice. A European solution will signal the beginning of a new era that will allow all legal residents of the island to live in a united Cyprus enjoying peace, security and prosperity.

The World Council of Hellenes (SAE), in cooperation with the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots and the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes, continue to offer their support to Greece and Cyprus in order to reinforce to everyone that resolution of the issue of a united Cyprus cannot wait. We are committed to continue the efforts to achieve of our goals and we keep alive the hope that the resolution we have been waiting for will soon become a reality.
