PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
MESSAGE OF SAE PRESIDENT ANDREW A. ATHENS FOR THE 44TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF CYPRUS
Chicago, 1/10/2004

Worldwide Hellenism joins Cypriot people at the celebrations for the 44th Anniversary of the Independence of Cyprus. This is a very important Anniversary since all Cypriot Hellenes hope for a termination of the occupation and division of the island.

Cyprus accession to the European Union raises hopes that the much desired solution may be achieved through all legal channels. It is very important to continue to pursue the issue towards all directions with unity and make known that the present situation is not acceptable.

In the past thirty years the Hellenic Omogeneia has supported the efforts of the Cypriot and Greek Governments, and will continue to do so until a viable solution is agreed upon for Cyprus. A solution, representative of Europe that will begin a new era ensuring that all Cypriots reside on a united land with peace, safety and prosperity.

The World Council of Hellenes Abroad in cooperation with the World Coordinating Committee for Cyprus (PSEKA), the World Federation of Worldwide Cypriots (POMAK) and the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH) as well as the Interparliamentary Association of Hellenes (PADEE), will continue to support any effort that will result at a viable and just solution for Cyprus. We strongly believe that through our persistent and continuous promotion of our just positions we will achieve our goals.
