Dr. Stefanos Gialamas, Provost of Boston-based Anatolias American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) in Greece, and Coordinator of our Regions Science & Academic Network, today joined V.P. and Regional Coordinator Chris P. Tomaras in announcing an innovative new program developed by the two organizations. This program, the -Americas Culture & Tech Camp, is designed to give our high-school age Greek youth in The Americas a unique opportunity to increase their exposure to Greeces culture, while simultaneously advancing their technological skills in the rapidly-expanding areas of digital media, web development and networking, said Tomaras.
Dr. Gialamas pointed out that, ACT has great experience offering such Technology and Cultural programs both to students from Greece, and from abroad. Specifically, ACT has successfully organized a number of special summer programs for students from abroad in the past. Its outstanding faculty and state-of-the-art facilities will provide Œs young people the perfect setting for this new program. Were very excited about having young people from all over The Americas, sponsored by and Mr. Tomaras, here next summer. The month-long program is open to all students aged 16-18 (as of next summer); the Inaugural 2005 session of this -Americas Culture & Tech Camp will be held from June 28 to July 23. There are no instruction, housing, or book fees for the participating students to pay; we are pleased to cover those expenses on behalf of -Americas, continued Tomaras. ACT is providing overall Program supervision, as well as the classrooms, field trips and Internet time, so students will be responsible only for their air travel to and from Thessaloniki, and for their meals, he emphasized. The program will be limited to a group of 20, on a first-come, first-served basis, with the Deadline for applications March 31, 2005.
Program elements will include intensive classes, in English, covering Greek Culture and the Technologies associated with digital media, web development and networks. But the Program will also take its participants out of the classroom with regular trips to Greeces museums and historical sites, along with participation in Thessalonikis rich summer calendar of cultural events and concerts. ACT's Technology headquarters, located in the Stavros S. Niarchos Technology Center, feature 2 general use state-of-the-art computer laboratories, a digital Media laboratory, a Networking laboratory, a Digital Media and Production Room. Students have access to Digital Camcorders, Digital Cameras, dual miniDV/VHS recording decks, flatbed and slide scanners, as well as audio recording equipment. In addition, technology enhanced classrooms, small audio-visual rooms and a teleconferencing room provide additional collaboration, learning and event spaces. Check for more on this N. & S.
