The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis met today with the Board of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) and discussed issues relevant to the Enabling Law on SAE�s operation.
The discussion on the proposals for the Enabling Law that is pending for two years, aims at a real upgrading of the role of SAE and focuses on the definition of its legal frame, the review of its up to date course and the assessment of its work up to now as well as of the various submitted proposals.
At the same time, through the formulation of the problems, the final proposals on basic issues will be processed and expected to be finalized within three months. Following, the proposals will be forwarded by SAE to the wide base of the Omogeneia for discussion (Federations, Communities, Church, etc), that will co-decide on their final formulation.
As the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis, in cooperation with the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, the voting on the Enabling Law for SAE will be set, in sight of the 6th World SAE Convention in Thessaloniki.
�Omogeneia is among the priorities of the Prime Minister, Kostas Karamanlis. Our goal is through a democratic discussion to co-decide any changes are necessary for a more effective operation of SAE and become the actual expression of all the Omogeneia around the world.�, Mr. Skandalakis said. �SAE should open up and include all the Omogeneia. This is what the Omogeneia wants and this is what we intend to do�.
�Our main focus is the reorganization of SAE in such a way so as to increase our effectiveness in our efforts to approach as many as possible Hellenes, leaders of the Omogeneia in all areas, who will assist SAE to develop into the top organization of Hellenes around the world and the link among the Omogeneia and Greece�, SAE President said.
The works of the meetings conclude tomorrow. In the morning the Board Members will continue their meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, while they will also meet with the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Mr. Nikolaos Tsiartsionis, the Prefect of Thessaloniki, Mr. Panayiotis Psomiadis and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Vasilis Papageorgopoulos.
The Board will also meet with the Presidium of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis, President, Mr. Grigoris Niotis, A� Vice-President and Mr. Nikolaos Gatzis, B� Vice-President.
Event for the present and future of Hellenism in the former Soviet Union
On Sunday December 12, 2004 the Center for the Research and Study of the Civilization of the Black Sea of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SAE are organizing a one-day event with the title �Hellenism of the Former Soviet Union: Present and Future.�
The event will take place at the Prefecture of Thessaloniki. Among the participants will be the following: the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis, the Prefect of Thessaloniki, Mr. Panayiotis Psomiadis, the President of the Center for the Black Sea, Mr. Konstantinos Adamidis, SAE President, Mr. Andrew A. Athens, GGAE officials, SAE Board Members, Presidents and representatives of the Federations of Hellenic Communities of Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Crimea, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Moldavia.
Issues that will be discussed during the event include the problems regarding education and the Greek Language, culture while there will be a presentation of the programs implemented for the support of Hellenes in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
