Press Release
Thessaloniki, 11/12/2004
The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Mr. Andrew A. Athens characterized the Meeting of SAE Board in Thessaloniki on December 9-11, 2004 as extremely important and productive for SAEs and Hellenisms future around the world.
Since SAEs establishment we have accomplished a lot and we have been recognized for that not only in Greece but also in the countries where we have offered our assistance through our Medical Program. Our main priority is the further development and expansion of our programs and projects for Education and Culture.
I believe that in close cooperation with the government and all political parties we will proceed to SAEs upgrading and approach all creative powers of Hellenism Abroad. We will continue our efforts for the promotion of our National Issues and Orthodoxy around the world.
During the three-day meetings SAE Board Members presented their reports of activities and had a series of discussions with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis, the President and the Vice President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Evgenios Haitidis and Mr. Grigoris Niotis, on issues regarding the processing of proposals for the Enabling Law for SAE.
The proposals regarding SAEs new Enabling Law will be forwarded for discussion to the wide base of the Omogeneia that will co-decide their final formulation.
Omogeneia is among the priorities for the Prime Minister, Mr. Kostas Karamanlis. Our goal is through a democratic discussion to co-decide for any changes are considered as necessary for the more effective operation of SAE, in order to become the actual expression of the Omogeneia around the world, Mr. Skandalakis said.
I am optimistic that SAE will successfully carry out its role in the future, and we as the Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, we will stand by the side of our fellow Hellenes around the world, Mr. Haitidis, President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad said. SAE has accomplished a lot and it is unfair to criticize it. There are always higher goals to pursue and we will achieve them, through the discussions we had during this meeting.
Mr. Niotis stressed the fact that the new Enabling Law should bind the Hellenic State, the Hellenic Government, the Hellenic Parliament and the Hellenic Local Government, in order for SAE to become the actual representative body of worldwide Hellenism, to be able to submit proposals and receive answers and to be able to consult with the Hellenic State on terms of trust and understanding.
Today SAE Board met with the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Mr. Nikolaos Tsiartsionis, who among others stated that SAE is recognized by all as the only communication vehicle around the world. The experience and maturity acquired all these years encourage us to believe that despite difficulties, SAE will successfully move to the future.
SAE Board Members also met with the Honorary President of EDEK, Mr. Vassos Lyssaridis who thanked Mr. Athens and the members of the Board, as well as all Hellenism Abroad for their efforts regarding the Cyprus issue.
