Press Release
Thessaloniki, 13/12/2004
The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Mr. Andrew A. Athens will depart tonight for Tirana. The goal of his visit, which will conclude on December 15, 2004, is the promotion of the plans for the expansion of SAEs Medical Program in Albania in cooperation with the Archbishop of Tirana and all Albania, Anastasios. Mr. Athens will be accompanied by the Medical Director of SAEs Medical Program, Dr. Charles Kanakis, and the Legal Advisor of SAE, Mr. Dimitris Papadopoulos.
During his stay at the Albanian Capital, SAE President will have a series of meetings with the Prime Minister of Albania, Mr. Fatos Nano, the Minister of Health, Mr. Leonard Soli, the Greek Ambassador, Mr. Karkabasis and the Mayor of Himara, Mr. Vasilis Bolanos. Mr. Athens will also meet with the Director of USAID, Mr. Burnhold, to discuss the possibility of tripartite funding (the Governments of Greece, USA and SAE), for the establishment of a Medical Center in Himara for the Hellenes of the area.
It should be noted that the Government of Albania is positive to an expansion of the Medical Program in Albania. SAEs plans, under consideration, include the creation of two more Medical Centers in St. Saranta and Skodra.
Since November 2003 SAE is cooperating with Archbishop Anastasios for the operation of a Medical Center in Georgoutsates, which serves approximately 500 patients per month.
SAE President will meet with the Archbishop Anastasios, following his return to Athens.
On December 15, Mr. Athens will present at the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, a report of SAEs activities as well as the organizations plans for the future. On December 14, the SAE Board Members have been invited to attend the meeting of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad.
