PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
Press Release
Chicago, 24/1/2005

The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) Andrew A. Athens will attend on January 27, 2005 in Thessaloniki, the commemoration of the National Day of the 50.000 Greek Jews, Heroes and Martyrs of the Holocaust, following the invitation by the President of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, David Saltiel.
Mr. Athens will attend the Memorial Service at the Holocaust Memorial of the Greek Jews of Thessaloniki, where he will lay a wreath and will address a greeting on behalf of Hellenes of the Diaspora and later he will attend the events at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.
It is only through this constant reminder that we can hope to comprehend the meaning of the Holocaust and feel the redeeming qualities of heroism and sacrifice. Nations should band together to pledge that such evil act will never be allowed to happen again, Mr. Athens stated.

January 27th was unanimously announced by the Hellenic Parliament as the National Day of Greek Jews, Heroes and Martyrs of the Holocaust. It should be mentioned that Thessaloniki has always been the center of the Greek Jewish Community and of one of the oldest Jewish communities of the Diaspora.
