Message of SAE President, Andrew A. Athens for the loss of the former Archbishop of N. & S. America, Iakovos
Chicago, 11/4/2005
The loss of the former Archbishop of N. & S. America, Iakovos has filled the Orthodox Church and all the Omogeneia with great sorrow. Iakovos as our spiritual father for 37 years has led all efforts for the promotion of issues of the Omogeneia, the Ecumenical Patriarchate and our National Issues.
With unique courage and self-denial he supported, in difficult times, Martin Luther King and his efforts for the recognition of the human rights of African Americans. His efforts fro the promotion of the unity of religions is invaluable since he was the first Greek Orthodox Bishop to visit in 1959 Pope John XXIII at the Vatican and for years he held the position of the President of the World Council of Churches.
I had the honor to have a close cooperation with Iakovos from my position as the President of the Archdiocese Council. He was the one to encourage me to create the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC) right after Turkeys invasion in Cyprus in 1974 for the promotion of a just and viable solution for the island.
He had the gift of being an unquestionable leader who knew how to persuade and lead others to struggles for the promotion of democracy and Hellenic values. Born in Imvros and raised by the values of the Patriarchal Theological School of Halki in Constantinople he never abandoned the efforts for the promotion and defense of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Hellenes of Imvros, Tenedos and Constantinople.
With great sorrow we say goodbye to the former Archbishop of N. & S. America, Iakovos and we promise to continue his work for the fulfillment of his visions.
