Press Release
Tbilisi, Georgia, 6/7/2005
SAE President, Andrew A. Athens during his visit in the Republic of Georgia from June 30 to July 5, 2005, met with the Georgian Minister of Interior, Mr. Ivan Merabishvilli and discussed issuer regarding safety and protection of human rights of Hellenes living in the area of Tsalka. Present at the meeting also were SAE s Legal Advisor, Mr. Dimitris Papadopoulos and the President of the Federation of Hellenic Communities of Georgia, Mr. Kyriakos Iordanidis.
Mr. Merabishvilli updated Mr. Athens on the actions taken by the Georgian Government for the safety of our fellow Hellenes, following the relevant decision of the President of the Republic of Georgia. Georgian citizens of Hellenic origin in Tsalka face, especially during the last two years, serious problems of violence, safety and protection of their properties, caused by Svania and Atzarians.
More specifically, Mr. Merabishvilli committed to take immediate measures in order to avoid any further move of colonists in the area, while he stressed the fact that the Georgian Government counts on the assistance from the Hellenic Government for better protection of the area.
Mr. Athens thanked the Georgian Minister for his decision to cooperate with SAE for the better promotion of solutions, and mentioned the importance of a rapid improvement of the situation in Tsalka.
The Georgian Minister of Interior thanked Mr. Athens for SAEs Medical Program in Georgia, the services of which are offered free of charge to all Georgian citizens.
During his stay in Tbilisi, SAE President also met with the Advisor A of the Hellenic Embassy, Mr. Dimitris Tranos, the Minister of Refugees & National Minorities, Ms. Astemirova and the US and UN Ambassadors, Mr. Richard Miles and Mr. David Clark, whom he updated on the developments regarding the situation in Tsalka.
Mr. Athens also met with the President of the Federation of Hellenic Communities of Georgia, Mr. Kyriakos Iordanidis, and with the Administration of the Hippocrates clinic in Tbilisi.
Mr. Athens also visited Hellenes in the Hellenic villages of the area of Tsalka, where he met with the Prefect of the area. It is noted that SAE examines the possibility of taking up an initiative to offer information to our fellow Hellenes who work in Greece, Cyprus and other countries, on the Land Registry of Georgia, in order to submit the necessary documentation for their property. The issue is directly linked to the problem of illegal take over of approximately two thousand properties owned by Hellenes.
