MESSAGE OF SAE PRESIDENT ANDREW A. ATHENS IN REMEMBERANCE OF THE INVASION IN CYPRUS
Chicago, 15/7/2005
Chicago July 15, 2005- Even though 31years have passed since the invasion of Cyprus, we still cannot forget the tragedy that followed and continues to plague the island republic. Worldwide Hellenism continues to seek an end to the occupation and division of the island. Having supported with all our strength the Governments of both Cyprus and Hellas, Hellenes around the world saluted the accession of Cyprus to the European Union, with the anticipation that soon the day will come when Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots will equally enjoy the benefits created from Cyprus participation in the larger European family.
Today we declare our willingness to fight any activities and policies that result in the creation of false impressions by presenting Greek-Cypriots as victimizers, false claims that could lead to official recognition of the Pseudo-State. Only when the political problem is finally resolved we will feel that justice has been done.
The World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) is in a continuous and close cooperation with the World Coordinating Committee for Cyprus (PSEKA), the World Federation of Worldwide Cypriots (POMAK) and the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH). We pledge to continue our intense efforts for a European and just solution for all Cypriots, based on the principles of international law.
