PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
Press Release
Thessaloniki, 21/7/2005

The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Andrew A. Athens met today with the Board of the Association of Lawyers of Thessaloniki and its President Dimitris Garoufas.
During the meeting Mr. Athens updated the Board members of the serious security and safety problems faced by Hellenes in Georgia, and of the progress of the international campaign on the same issue.
In sight of the formation of the National Cadastre Plan of Georgia, Mr. Athens requested the assistance of the Association for the registration of the properties of Hellenes in Georgia. Mr. Athens stressed the fact that all Hellenes from Georgia who work in Greece, Cyprus and other countries should immediately be informed in order to submit on time the necessary documentation to ensure their properties.
Dimitris Garoufas, President of the Association promised to contribute to this effort.
Our sensitivity on issues of concern for our fellow Hellenes is well known and we will offer our assistance to SAE. SAE is very important for Thessaloniki, the Capital of Hellenism Abroad, Mr. Garoufas said. The relevant decision will be taken during the meeting of the Board of the Association and then in cooperation with SAEs Legal Advisor, Mr. Dimitris Papadopoulos, the practical part of the contribution will be finalized.
According to the relevant data, more than 100.000 Hellenes have been emigrated from Georgia since the beginning of 1990, while more than 2000 properties have been taken over illegally at the 24 Hellenic Villages of Tsalka.
During the last two years Hellenes in Tsalka face violent actions caused by Svanias and Atzarians, resulting in 8 murders.
