Press Release
Chicago, 16/9/2005
Andrew A. Athens, President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) was one of the main speakers at the event organized on September 15 in New York by the Cyprus Federation of America, where Greek Prime Minister, Konstantinos Karamanlis and Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Petros Molyviatis received the Cyprus Justice Award.
In his speech Mr. Athens referred to the continuous struggles of the Omogeneia in America and around the world for a viable and just solution for Cyprus that have created a world alliance for the promotion of the message for human rights and freedom.
Mr. Athens especially recognized Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA, Harry Sophokleidis, President of POMAK, Panicos Papanicolaou, President of the Cyprus Federation of America and Andrew Manatos, President of the Coordinated Effort of Hellenes, and all those who for 31 consecutive years support the Cypriot cause.
Together we have championed the causes of justice for Cyprus, Hellenism and Orthodoxy. We have been successful in being heard at the top levels of government, knocking down the walls of animosity that others may have built, Mr. Athens said, stressing the fact that success is evident when Hellenes of the Diaspora work in unity and when devotion is more important that any political or personal ambitions.
We are not the government or ministers from our motherland. We are, however, dedicated Hellenes who can and do have an impact on the decision making process. Only history will be the judge of our effectiveness and how we have valiantly overcome the obstacles that we have faced and those challenges that continue to confront us. Together we have accomplished many great things and together we will do even more good things to ensure a just and humane Cyprus for all who call this land their home, Mr. Athens said and finished by ensuring everyone that the Omogeneia in unity and harmony will not be derailed from its mission and will continue to support both Hellas and Cyprus.
