MESSAGE OF ANDREW A. ATHENS, PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD COUNCIL OF HELLENES ABROAD (SAE) FOR OCTOBER 28th
Chicago, 24/10/2005
October 28th, 1940 symbolizes the faith of Hellenes in the values of Freedom and Democracy that characterizes Hellenism from ancient times. Moreover, it symbolizes the unity of Hellenes who with their historical OXI went against the foreign enemies while with their heroism through their just struggle, sent to the entire world the message that the value of Freedom is non- negotiable.
The heroic epic of 1940 is undoubtedly one of the most glorious moments in the history of modern Greece and today, 65 years later, it still is a source of inspiration for the younger generations and especially for Hellenes Abroad who are proud for their homeland.
This day will again be remembered and celebrated with events organized by all Hellenes around the world and will for once more highlight the need for unity when it comes to the promotion of our national issues, as well as the need for solidarity in the struggle against any effort of violation of human rights.
Hellenes around the world will once again prove that they support the creative course of Greece, defending the values for which heroes in 1940 fought for, and that they will continue to promote the ideals of our Greek culture at their host countries.
SAE also participates at the celebrations of Thessaloniki, the Capital of Hellenism Abroad, by honoring St. Demetrios and the liberation of the city in 1912.
