PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
Press Release
Thessaloniki, 19/11/2005

The Board of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) met today with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis. The Board discussed issues regarding proposals and comments received by SAE Regions on SAEs Enabling Law.
Following the meeting SAE President, Andrew A. Athens expressed his satisfaction for the fact that after approximately two years the Enabling Law for SAE is about to become a reality and offer the world organization new directions ensuring at the same time its advisory and consultative role.
Mr. Skandalakis mentioned the fact that the new Enabling Law for SAE will be a pioneering and radical law that will respond to the needs of a contemporary and functional organization that will ensure its advisory and consultative role. According to the Deputy Minister an effort is made for the upgrade of SAE in order to become a representative body for all the Omogeneia and the invitation of distinguished personalities who in cooperation with the organizations leadership will give a new force to both the organization and the Omogeneia.
Especially regarding the new law, the Deputy Minister noted that this will foresee the enhancement of the role of the Regions and the election of the Coordinating Councils during the Regional Conventions, while a special discussion was held regarding the establishment of three new Regions (countries of the Black Sea. Latin America and Canada), something that according to Mr. Skandalakis, will create the opportunity of an actual representation of all geographical areas that have their own characteristics and ways of operation.
On the issue of SAEs financial autonomy, Mr. Skandalakis noted that The Hellenic State is and will remain SAEs financial supporter until the organization is able to achieve its financial autonomy. The aim of this financial support is to offer SAE the opportunity to exercise its policies especially on issues of education and culture.
The new enabling law will soon be submitted to the Hellenic Parliament, while the 6th World SAE Convention will take place during the last trimester of 2006. The Regional Conventions will take place prior to the World Convention.
During its evening meeting SAE Board had a meeting with the Evgenios Haitidis President, Gregory Niotis A Vice-President and Nikolaos Gatzis B Vice-President of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad.
Also present at the meeting were: Mr. Marios Ieronimidi, Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus on issues of Hellenism Abroad, the MPs Stavros Kalafatis and Yiannis Magriotis and staff from the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad.
