The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) concluded his visit to Georgia. During his stay in Tbilisi, Mr. Andrew A. Athens held a series of meetings with government officials with whom he discussed issues regarding SAEs Medical Centers in Georgia and issues regarding security and human rights for Hellenes in the area of Tsalka.
SAE President and the Greek Ambassador in Georgia, Mr. Aggelopoulos, accompanied by the Director of SAEs Medical Program, Dr. Charles Kanakis met with the Ministers of Economy, Mr. Alexishvilli, Interior, Mr. Merabishvilli, Refugees, Mr. Keviashvilli and the Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Tzougeli.
The Georgian officials thanked SAE and Mr. Athens for the medical assistance and humanitarian aid offered to Georgian citizens since 1997 when SAE Medical Program was founded in Georgia. At a meeting with the Mayor of Tbilisi, Mr. Gougoulava, it was proposed by the City of Tbilisi to offer land for the construction of a second SAE Medical Center in the Georgian capital.
SAE Medical Center Hippocrates in Tbilisi serves approximately 16000 patient visits a month. The Medical Center recently acquired a modern x-ray machine and ultrasound equipment, with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During his meetings with the Ministers of Interior and of Refugees Mr. Athens discussed issues regarding security and human rights for Hellenes living in the area of Tsalka, Georgia. The two Ministers assured Mr. Athens that they seek actively the return of peace to the area in cooperation with the President of the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Georgia, Mr. Kyriakos Iordanidis. During his visit to Tsalka Mr. Athens expressed his satisfaction for the improvement of the situation since the violent acts against Hellenes have stopped. About 50 policemen have already been sent to the area and 15 police cars are expected to be delivered to the security forces. The cars have been contributed by Greece. Registration will soon begin for the properties owned by Hellenes.
SAEs President also met with the Patriarch of Georgia, Mr. Hlias, the new U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. John Tefft and the regional U.S. Director for International Development.
