Andrew A. Athens, President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), concluded today his visit to Ukraine accompanied by Dr. Charles Kanakis, Director of SAE�s Medical Program. The objective of the visit was to inspect the operation of SAE�s Medical Program in Ukraine.
During his stay in Ukraine Mr. Athens visited Doniesk and Mariupol where he met with citizens and patients who thanked him for the valuable help offered by the Medical Centers.
In Doniesk SAE President met with Ms. Neli Kaltseva, responsible for the program in the area. Ms. Kaltseva updated Mr. Athens on the operation of SAE�s mobile medical unit through which more than 17.000 citizens received medical care within the year 2005. The unit is equipped with modern cardiovascular and ultrasound medical machines, machines for the measurement of diabetes and visits three times a week approximately 60 villages.
At a meeting with the Regional Commander of Starobesefskayia district Mr. Vasilis Panko (of Hellenic origin), Mr. Athens received an honorary diploma in recognition of SAE�s invaluable offer to the citizens of Ukraine.
In Mariupol Mr. Athens visited SAE�s Diagnostic and Medical Center for Breast related diseases that began its operation in the fall 2003. The state of the art medical unit is equipped with a contemporary breast and cardiovascular ultrasound medical equipment while there are departments for the prevention of breast cancer and micro surgery and biopsies. In 2005 only, the center proceeded in 1.700 breast related and other specialized tests.
At the same time SAE�s mobile medical unit, with approximately 20 doctors in its staff, makes visits four times a week to the surrounding villages of Mariupol to offer primary health care and medicine. SAE has also hired 14 nurses to serve the schools of the area and their 10.000 students.
In total for 2005 in the area of Mariupol SAE Medical Program offered free medical services to more than 22.000 people in need.
During his stay in Mariupol Mr. Athens met with the Greek Consul General Mr. Frangiskos Kostelenos, the Commander of the Volodarskaya district, Mr. Petros Troyian and the President of the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Ukraine, Ms. Alexandra Protsenko.
Mr. Athens visited a number of villages and schools as well as an old people�s home in Grekovo Alexandrovka village in Mariupol, and offered supplies and medicine. Mr. Athens promised to personally undertake the responsibility for the maintenance of the heating system of the old people�s home, where approximately 50 elderly, cancer patients are taken care of.
SAE President left Ukraine today to travel to Athens where he will attend the 6th World Convention of Pontian Hellenism that will take place on July 6-9, while on the 4th of July he will attend the reception hosted by the American Ambassador to Greece.
