Andrew A. Athens, President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) was honored during the 6th World Convention of Pontian Hellenism that took place in Athens on July 6-9, 2006. The Convention was organized under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Carolos Papoulias.
Mr. Athens was honored in recognition of his contribution to Pontian Hellenism especially in the countries of the former Soviet Union through SAE�s Primary Health Care Program established by Mr. Athens on 1997, as well as for defending the human rights of Hellenes in Tsalka, Georgia.
Mr. Athens received his award during the opening of the Convention, made by the Greek Prime Minister Mr. Karamanlis. In his acceptance speech SAE President promised to continue SAE�s Medical Program for all our brothers in the countries of the Black Sea, until all their problems are solved, while the Program will be expanded in other countries of the former Soviet Union as well.
Regarding the demand of all Pontian Associations around the world for the international recognition of the Pontian Genocide, Mr. Athens said that he will continue all efforts for a successful outcome.
During his stay in Athens last week, SAE President met with governmental officials with whom he discussed issues regarding both SAE and the Omogeneia in general.
Mr. Athens met with the Minister of Development, Mr. Dimitris Sioufas, the Minister of National Education & Religious Affairs, Ms. Marieta Yiannakou, the Minister of Culture, Mr. Giorgos Voulgarakis, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Theodoros Kassimis and the Deputy Minister of Economy, Mr. Christos Folias. Mr. Athens also met with the President of PASOK, Mr. George Papandreou.
Finally SAE President attended the discussion of the Enabling Law for SAE held in the Hellenic Parliament.
