The 6th World Convention of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) will take place in Thessaloniki on December 8-10, 2006 as decided today at the common meeting of SAE Board with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Theodoros Kassimis.
At the same meeting and with the presence of the members of the Presidium of the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad, Evgenios Haitidis, President, Gregory Niotis, A� Vice President and Nikolaos Gatzis, B� Vice President, the Board also decided to hold the seven Regional Conventions during the next two months according to the new law for SAE.
Following the end of the meeting the Deputy Minister expressed his satisfaction for the way SAE Board prepares the enforcement of the new law. The Minister stressed the fact that the new Law for SAE �aims to decentralize activities and offers the opportunities for more actions within the regions always based on the good planning of the SAE Board.�
The Deputy Minister thanked Mr. Athens for his cooperation and invaluable contributions and noted that Hellenism is united and that Hellas and Cyprus are the basic coordinating centers of worldwide Hellenism.
SAE Board unanimously decided to honor SAE President, Andrew A. Athens during the World Convention by giving him the title of Emeritus SAE President in recognition of his work to the benefit of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. It was also proposed to form a committee consisting of distinguished individuals of the Diaspora led by Mr. Athens.
Andrew A. Athens thanked all Board members for their respect to his work and noted the excellent cooperation with Mr. Kassimis and the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for Issues of Hellenism Abroad for the preparation of the Regional and World Conventions.
SAE President also mentioned that the present meeting in Nicosia conveyed the message that all Hellenes Abroad in cooperation with the associations of Cypriots Abroad around the world will continue in unity to fight for the rights of Cyprus and our national issues and will continue to offer their support to all our brothers and sisters who are in need.
�Hellenism and Orthodoxy are for me synonymous and I have dedicated my life in their promotion and support�, Mr. Athens said. SAE President said that after the end of his term as SAE President, a position he holds since the organization�s establishment in 195, he will continue to work for Hellenism and Orthodoxy.
SAE Alternate President, Stefanos P. Tamvakis, announced that following the excellent results of the cooperation of SAE with the �Alexandros S. Onassis� Foundation, a new project will be implemented with the title �Speak Greek-Live the Greek Way�. The project that will be implemented in all continents has a budget of approximately �300.000.
The works of the SAE Board meeting honored with their presence the following: the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Georgios Iakovou, the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Dimitris Rallis, the Director of the Agency of the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Cypriots Abroad, Marios Ieronimidis, the General Director of the GGAE, Yiannis Kyparissidis, and others.
