'ACQUAINTANCE WITH GREECE' for 100 youth from the diaspora of the United States and Canada, December 19, 2004- January 4, 2005


The General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad organises the "Acquaintance with Greece' Program for 100 youth from the Diaspora (60 from the United States and 40 from Canada). The duration of the program is 17 days (16 nights), from December 19, 2004 to January 4, 2005, in Athens.

Some of the activities incluye: a one-day cruise at the Argosaronic Gulf islands; one-day visits and excursions to sites of historical and archaeological interest in the greater Attica region, Central Greece and the Peloponnese; lectures on various topics; visits to various sights and facilities of general interest; workshops of Greek traditional dances, music, song and drama; and cultural, recreational and sport events.

Eligible to participate are young people of Greek origin (at least one Greek parent), 18 to 25 years of age (they must have completed their 18th year by 19 December 2004), who live permanently abroad. Greek civil servants or children of Greek civil servants who work abroad or persons who live temporarily abroad are not eligible.

The round-trip air fares shall be borne by the participants and their participation in the Program's events and activities shall be compulsory.

Applications shall be submitted by those eligible for participation to the local Greek ambassadorial and consular authorities until Monday November 15, 2004.

"Program of Greek Language and Culture" for 140 Youth of Greek origin from Oceania, Africa and Latin America, January 9th to January 30th 2005"


The General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad organises for one more year the "Program of Hellenic Language and Culture" for 140 youth of Greek origin from Oceania, Africa and Latin America.

The duration of the program has been determined totally to 22 days, from January 9 to January 30, 2005 and will be held in Athens (18 nights) and in Thessaloniki (3 nights).

The program includes: Greek Language courses in cooperation with the University of Athens, seminars by Academic Specialists on subjects of various interests, artistic workshops on traditional dances, theater and music, tours in Nafplion, Mycenae, Delphi, Trikala, Meteora, Tempi, Dion and Thessaloniki, visits to various sights and facilities of general interest, and visits to cultural, student and other associations and agencies.

All the above expenses will be covered by the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad.

Eligible for participation are young people of Greek origin (at least one Greek parent), permanent residents abroad, 18 to 25 years of age (they should have complete the 18th year of their age until January 9, 2005) and who have not participated in the past at a similar Program. Civil Servants or children of Civil Servants and people living temporarily outside Greece are not eligible to participate.

Travel to and from Greece are covered by the participants and all activities require compulsory attendance.

The applications for participation may be submitted to Greek Embassies and Consular Offices until Friday November 12, 2004.

World Youth Camp

"34 Countries.. 5 Continents.. 600 Youth.. 25 languages.. One Word HELLAS"

America, Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa. Five Continents, one Hellenism unite in Greece every year. Hellene children and youth who may have never visited Greece and who may not speak a single Greek word, come together to spend a few days in the country that gave birth to them.

With the support and cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad and the Local Government, SAE hosts Hellene youth from around the world, in an effort to develop stronger ties with the homeland and to assist Hellenes abroad to meet each other and get acquainted with contemporary Greece.
All started in Skotina, Pieria in 2001, to continue in 2002 at Poseidi, Halkidiki, and in 2003 at Kamena Vourla, Fthiotida. Until today approximately 2000 Hellene Youth from all over the world, have met, created life long relationships and have taken with the a part of their homeland.

The World Youth Camp becomes every year a meeting point for youth Hellenes abroad and a starting point of friendships that last forever. With the cooperation of the SAE Youth Network, youth from every corner of the earth, meet, learn the Greek language, have fun and interact not only with the Greek Culture, but also with the Greek contemporary way of life.

On the journey to their countries, they all carry with them a part of Greece, which will travel with them until next year, when they will return...
