The Canadian Embassy is proud to announce The 2005 Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research at Saint Savvas Cancer Hospital in Athens. The First Terry Fox Run in Greece in 2003 was a success with over 300 people participating and more than 8,000 Euro raised for cancer research at Saint Savvas Cancer Hospital. We hope this year's event will be bigger and better. Participants can walk or run a 5 km or 10 km course. The Run will take place on Sunday, April 3, 2005, starting at 13:00 at Syngrou Estate in Maroussi. All the money raised will go to the Centre for Immunology and Immunotherapy for Cancer at Saint Savvas Cancer Hospital. Canadian Terry Fox was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer which resulted in the amputation of his right leg. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his run the Marathon of Hope. He began his journey in April 1980 on Canadas East coast. He ran 42 km every day for 143 days, crossing Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario. Five months later, having covered 5,373 km, Terry was forced to stop because his health had seriously deteriorated. Terry lost his battle with cancer in 1981 at the age of 22. He had succeeded in raising $24.17 million, one dollar for every Canadian. 2005 marks the 25th anniversary since Terry Fox began his run in Canada. It is time to celebrate Terrys legacy and to keep his dream of finding a cure for cancer alive.
