PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
Press Release
Thessaloniki, 27/1/2005
The President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Mr. Andrew A. Athens concluded today his visit to Greece following the invitation of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, David Saltiel to attend todays events for the National Memorial Day for the 50.000 Jews of Thessaloniki that were exterminated at the Nazi concentration camps.
Mr. Athens attended the memorial service organized at the Holocaust Memorial for the Greek Jews of Thessaloniki, where on behalf of Hellenes of the Diaspora he laid a wreath and addressed the audience. Mr. Athens will also attend the events that will take place at the Concert Hall of Thessaloniki.
Today, around the world, countless reminders will prompt us to think of the victims of the concentration camps and of those who vanished in World War II. It is only through this constant reminder that we can hope to comprehend the meaning of the Holocaust and feel the redeeming qualities of heroism and sacrifice Mr. Athens said stressing the fact that nations should band together to pledge that such evil act will never be allowed to happen again.
We are frequently becoming witnesses to attitudes that trivialize the Nazi menace which many of us, myself included, fought during World War II. In this solemn ceremony, the first commemoration of the National Remembrance Day of the Greek Jews, we call upon our schools, our places of worship, and our other institutions, to teach to the newer generations the History of the Holocaust. We must never forget this and other murderous and inhuman acts of genocide that nations, governments or groups of people have inflicted upon the human race.
During his stay in Athens, SAE President met on January 25 with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Panayiotis Skandalakis with whom he discussed issues relevant to SAEs Enabling Law and the construction of the new SAE Medical Center in Stavropol, Russia.
Mr. Athens expressed his satisfaction for Mr. Skandalakis assurance that the Government supports SAEs work and gives all necessary directions for the implementation of the programs regarding infrastructure at the countries with Hellenic populations.
The construction of the new SAE Medical Center in Stavropol, Russia following the personal commitment of Prime Minister Karamanlis, is on its way. Already the Director of SAEs Medical Center in Tbilisi, Rolland Stamatov visited Stavropol in order to proceed to a review of the plans prepared by SAE during the last two years. The final plan for the construction of the Medical Center is expected to be presented at the beginning of the coming spring.
Regarding SAEs Enabling Law, Mr. Athens mentioned that at the next SAE Board Meeting in the beginning of March at SAE headquarters in Thessaloniki, the Board will submit a unified proposal.
Finally, during a meeting he had with the new American Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Charles P. Ries SAE President congratulated him for his new position and stressed the fact that the Omogeneia wishes and supports with all of its power the further development of US relations with Greece to the benefit of both countries.
