CHICAGO, The Cypriot-American Society will honor Senator Olympia J. Snowe, the only Greek American woman in the U.S. Senate, and with Senator Sarbanes� imminent retirement, the only Greek American in the U.S. Senate, at a banquet on Saturday, February 4. The banquet will also feature the new Cyprus Ambassador to the U.S., Evripides Evriviades, as a special guest.
�We will have with us not only Senator Snowe, who has worked tirelessly to bring to a just conclusion the conflict in the Republic of Cyprus, but we will also host Ambassador Evriviades in his first visit to the Midwest,� said Endy Zemenides, president of the Cypriot-American Society. The society was known until recently under the name Cypriot Brotherhood.
Earlier on the same day, Senator Snowe will be feted in a private fundraising reception co-sponsored by the UHAC National and the Cypriot-American Society. On Friday, Feb. 3, Ambassador Evriviades will be the speaker at a lunch sponsored by the President�s Club of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and UHAC. The ambassador recently received the Martin Luther King Award for International Service.
�The Cypriot-American Society event will be a time of honoring leading Hellenes, but we will also celebrate our ethnicity and dance to the tunes of the Hellenic Five,� Zemenides said.
The dinner-dance will begin with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. at Cotillion Banquets, 360 S. Creekside Drive, Palatine. Dinner is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $70 per adult ticket and $40 for children and can be purchased by calling (312) 840-8633.
