The Professor of Surgery, Mr. Nikolaos Lygidakis received the Golden Medal of the National Center of Medical Research of Spain, one of the highest distinctions awarded in Spain. The medal was awarded by King Huan Karlos and Queen Sofia during a special event in Madrid.

Professor Nikolaos Lygidakis was honored for his pioneering research work and his 25 years of work in the area of cancer.
 
Five more important scientists from all over the world were honored during this special event that was organized in on the occasion of the celebrations for the completion of 75 years of work of the National Center of Medical Research of Spain.

Members of the Royal Academy of Spain, 12 Ministers of the Spanish Government and approximately 3000 guests attended the event.
